Lucrative contract extension for Antetokounmpo

Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn’t been particularly encouraging about his situation in Milwaukee and agreed to sign a new three-year deal with the Bucks on Monday.

This was announced by the Greek himself on social networks, who obviously seems very happy to be staying in Wisconsin. ESPN later said the deal was worth a total of $186 million.

Antetokounmpo, 28, will be associated with the Bucks through the end of the 2026-2027 season as he is just beginning the third year of a five-campaign contract with the team. This “Supermax” contract was signed in 2020. However, according to American media, the player also has a renegotiation option for 2027-2028.

Before making a long-term commitment to Milwaukee, the two-time MVP winner wanted to make sure he had the chance to compete for another NBA title. The Bucks won the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 2020-21, but have won just one series in two years since then.

The team did not sit idle as it ended its association with head coach Mike Budenholzer, who led it to five Central Division titles in as many years. He was replaced by Adrian Griffin, a former Toronto Raptors assistant.

The Bucks also signed the productive Damian Lillard and parted ways with Jrue Holiday and Deandre Ayton, among others.

Antetokounmpo was invited to the All-Star Game for the seventh consecutive year and averaged 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game in 2022-2023.
