While the Ryzen 9 7945HX and Ryzen 9 7945HX3D performed spectacularly in our benchmarks, there are only a few laptops equipped with Dragon series processors. This situation could change in the coming weeks, but at the cost of greater confusion. Golden Pig update on Bilibili (via Videocardz) claims that AMD has two new high-end laptop processors up its sleeve, the Ryzen 9 7940HX and the Ryzen 9 7840HX.
The leaker adds that both chips will have identical specifications to their xx45 counterparts, with the only difference being the clocks. Therefore, the Ryzen 9 7940HX will continue to be released as a 16-core CPU and the Ryzen 9 7840HX as a 12-core component. Unfortunately, there is no indication as to when any of the processors will be released. This will make things much more confusing for the Chinese market, which will have three CPUs of the same name on the market: the Ryzen 9 7940HX, the Ryzen 9 7940H and the Ryzen 9 7940HS Ryzen 9 7940HS. In addition, AMD’s own nomenclature (7045 for Dragon Range, 7040 for Phoenix) is not taken into account, which makes it even more difficult for end users to distinguish between different hardware.
The Ryzen 9 7940HX and Ryzen 9 7840HX could only be launched in China. You could end up in high-end, but not quite flagship, laptops paired with mid-range Nvidia/AMD graphics cards. A worldwide release would be ideal, but it wouldn’t matter much if OEMs refused to use these SKUs in their high-end laptops.
