Maryland co-offensive coordinator Kevin Sumlin arrested and charged with drunk driving during team bye week in Florida – CBS Sports

Kevin Sumlin, Maryland’s co-offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, was arrested over the weekend in Florida for driving under the influence, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The Terrapins were on release week at the time of the arrest, which occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday in Tampa. There was no accident or property damage during the incident.

Sumlin pleaded not guilty and waived charges. He faces a charge that carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison. According to the report, Sumlin refused a breathalyzer test, which could result in a one-year driver’s license suspension.

“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the university said in a statement. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”

Maryland hired Sumlin as co-offensive coordinator earlier this year, and his presence has been felt on an offensive team that has led the Terps to a top-four position among Big Ten teams in points per game. Although Sumlin was a standout defensive player at Purdue, he made a name for himself as an offensive assistant before getting the Houston job. And most notably, he coached 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M. Sumlin was fired after the 2017 season and posted a 51-26 record. He later coached in Arizona from 2018 to 2020.
