This Tuesday, October 24th, in Tel Aviv, 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz is the first of those taken hostage by Hamas on October 7th to tell of his captivity. It took more than two weeks. Yocheved Lifshitz had been released a few hours earlier along with Nurit Kuper, 79, for “humanitarian reasons,” Hamas said, suggesting that the operation took place with mediation from Egypt and Qatar. A “wonderful” message that greeted his daughter Sharone as she knelt next to him to translate her mother’s words into English. However, the family’s concerns remain: Yocheved Lifshitz’s 83-year-old husband is still held in the Gaza Strip, as is Nurit Kuper’s.

“An unimaginable nightmare”

The two women were kidnapped on the border of the Palestinian enclave in Kibbutz Nir Oz, which was decimated by terrorists from the Islamist movement – more than one in four people in the community have died or disappeared since October 7th. “They attacked our homes. They killed and kidnapped young and old without distinction. I experienced an unimaginable nightmare,” whispers
