“Israeli Army warplanes attacked military infrastructure and Syrian Army mortar launchers in response to the shooting in Israel yesterday (Tuesday),” the Israeli Army said in a statement. A spokesman told AFP that the attacks took place inside Syria.
The war between Israel and Hamas broke out on October 7 when fighters from the Palestinian Islamist movement infiltrated Israeli territory and massacred civilians on the street or in the middle of a music festival.
Since that bloody attack, more than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel and about 220 Israeli, foreign or binational hostages have been identified by local authorities.
For its part, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, announced on Tuesday a new total death toll of 5,791, including 2,360 children killed in retaliation since Israel began its incessant bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
Israel regularly targets positions in Syria and fears of an expansion of the conflict between Israel and Hamas with Damascus, but also Hezbollah in Lebanon, are growing.
Israeli strikes on Sunday destroyed Syria’s two main airports, Aleppo and Damascus, killing two employees, according to official Syrian media.
The two infrastructures had already been taken out of service on the 12th, then Aleppo airport was attacked again on the 15th, leaving five injured, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH).
Israel has carried out hundreds of air offensives against its neighbor since the Syrian civil war began more than a decade ago, mostly targeting Iranian-backed forces, Hezbollah fighters and army positions. Syrians.
Israel rarely comments on its attacks in Syria on a case-by-case basis, but has reiterated that it will not allow Iran to increase its presence there.
