After weeks of waiting due to the dismissal of previous Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Mike Johnson finally took over as Speaker of the House of Representatives and received the required majority of votes.
Republicans elected Mike Johnson as the new speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, filling a vacuum that had existed for several weeks since the impeachment of Kevin McCarthy.
The vote ended 220-209, giving Republicans the votes they needed to finally have a speaker after attempts by Reps. Steve Scalise, Jim Jordan and Tom Emmer failed days earlier. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York State was nominated by the Democratic Caucus.
Johnson, who was nominated by Republican Caucus Elise Stefanik, is a Louisiana state lawmaker who participated in former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
