- President Joe Biden downplayed new House Speaker Mike Johnson’s previous actions to overturn the 2020 election
- At a news conference on Wednesday with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Biden said he was not concerned that Johnson would overturn the 2024 results
- However, the 2024 Biden-Harris campaign ran successfully, saying Johnson was an “extreme MAGA” figure
President Joe Biden said Wednesday he is not worried about new House Speaker Mike Johnson trying to overturn the 2024 election because he is sure former President Donald Trump will not be able to do so in 2020 become.
Biden held a Rose Garden news conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before the state dinner as it was announced that the stalemate in the House of Representatives had ended after 22 days and Louisiana Rep. Mike Johnson had been elected speaker.
Johnson was among Trump allies who spread conspiracy theories about voting machines after the 2020 election and encouraged colleagues to file a lawsuit challenging Biden’s victory in four swing states.
But when the president was asked whether he feared that Johnson would again refute the election results, Biden answered clearly “no.”
“Look, I wasn’t worried that the last guy would overturn the election,” Biden said. “They had about 60 lawsuits that went all the way to the Supreme Court, and every time they lost. ‘I understand the Constitution.’

It was the first time Biden fielded questions about the new speaker, who was the fourth Republican nominated by his party following the Oct. 3 ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
In his hands at the press conference, Biden held a note card with the names, news outlets and photos of the two American and two Australian reporters who asked questions of the two leaders.
While Biden played down any threat Johnson might pose, he was quick to criticize House Republicans in his 2024 presidential campaign for unanimously electing an “extreme MAGA” figure.
“MAGA Mike Johnson’s ascension to speaker solidifies MAGA’s extreme takeover of the House Republican Conference,” Biden-Harris spokesman Ammar Moussa said in a statement. “Now Donald Trump has his loyal foot soldier, banning abortion nationwide, leading efforts to deny free and fair election results, gutting Social Security and Medicare, and advancing the extreme MAGA agenda at the expense of middle-class families.”
“22 days before Congress must act to prevent a government shutdown, and while our allies abroad depend on our help at war, the extreme MAGA Republicans of the House of Representatives have nominated a man as their second president who still won’t wants to admit that President Biden won.” “Election 2020,” Moussa continued. “The American people rejected the extreme MAGA ideology at the ballot box because they understand what it is about.” And so to every MAGA Republican who supported this election.”
“See you in November,” he added.

Trump put his finger on the scales and had endorsed Johnson after saying in New Hampshire on Monday that he planned to stay out of the speakership fight for a while.
During an appearance at the New Hampshire Statehouse to put his name on that state’s Republican primary ballot, Trump said only “Jesus Christ” could easily win the speaker’s race.
But after Representative Tom Emmer’s bid failed – a candidacy that Trump was unsure about and later rejected – Johnson was able to secure all 220 Republican votes.
“Congratulations to Rep. Mike Johnson.” He will be a great “speaker.” Make America Great Again!’ Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday.
Trump initially supported Rep. Jim Jordan, another candidate whose bid failed.
