According to American news channel CNN, citing law enforcement sources, at least 16 people died in multiple shootings on Wednesday evening, October 25, in Lewiston, Maine. ABC, for its part, mentions 10 deaths. Fox News and NBC speak of 22 victims. In addition, 50 to 60 people were injured. The suspect remains at large, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston issued a statement saying it was “responding to a mass shooting that resulted in multiple fatalities” and was coordinating the admission of patients with area hospitals.
Shootings in three different locations
The shootings took place at three different locations, a bowling alley, a restaurant and a Walmart supermarket fulfillment center. “We encourage all businesses to close their doors while we investigate,” the sheriff’s office said early Wednesday evening. Lewiston police posted several photos of the main suspect on their Facebook page. US President Joe Biden was quickly informed of the situation.
“Please stay in your home with the doors locked,” state police said. “If you see any suspicious activity or people, please call 911 (emergency services, editor’s note).” Local authorities also released a photo of a white car and urged citizens to contact them if they see it vehicle detected. Public schools will remain closed Thursday, a school district official said on X (formerly Twitter). “I am appalled by the events tonight in Lewiston,” Maine Rep. Jared Golden said in a statement. Lewiston is part of Androscoggin County and is located approximately 35 miles north of Portland, Maine’s largest city.
