The Brazilian Academy of Literature announced this week the addition of the word “dorama” to the Portuguese language dictionary. The term refers to series produced in Asia that have gained prominence in Brazil with the emergence of Korean culture.
“Audiovisual fictional work in serial format, produced in East and Southeast Asia, of various genres and themes, generally with a local cast and in the language of the country of origin,” defines the entry created for the new word.
Next, ABL goes deeper into the explanation. “Doramas were created in Japan in the 1950s and expanded to other Asian countries, acquiring characteristics and cultural characteristics specific to each area,” the text also says.
“Specific names are also used to identify the country of origin, such as the Englishlanguage loanwords Jdrama for Japanese dramas, Kdrama for Koreans, Cdrama for Chinese.”
Some examples of dramas available in Brazil are “Love Alarm”, “Doona!” and “An Extraordinary Lawyer”.
