A doctor at a hospital in Cambridge, Ont., witnessed a birth he won’t soon forget: The patient he was with gave birth to a 14.5-pound baby, the largest he’s ever seen 15 years as a doctor.
Little Sonny Ayres, born Oct. 23 via cesarean section, is the largest baby born at Cambridge Memorial Hospital since 2010, when the facility began collecting data. .
“We were shocked when we saw the baby being born. He was plump and chubby. We put him on the scales and said this is a very big baby,” said Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe told CTV News.
His mother, Britteney Ayres, said she knew her child would be strong. However, she couldn’t hide her surprise when she saw her son’s weight.
“He weighed 14.5 pounds. “I never thought I would say that out loud,” the new mother exclaimed. We were all surprised by his size.”
On average, a newborn weighs 7 pounds, half as much as Sonny.
The baby joins a family with five children. He is barely heavier than his youngest, who weighed 13 pounds at birth.
Chance Ayres, the child’s father, admitted that his wife tends to give birth to large babies.
“All of our kids were huge! It’s just a little bit bigger,” he said.
He confirmed that Sonny will be the couple’s last child.
“It’s the end,” he pleaded, laughing. Five is enough!”
