The Pascale Nadeau affair is settled amicably

The former news anchor of TV newsPascale Nadeau, has amicably resolved the dispute between her and her union and Radio-Canada management.

In a brief statement released to media outlets on Thursday, the public broadcaster wrote: “Radio-Canada, Ms. Pascale Nadeau and her union have decided to resolve their differences amicably after the union acted on behalf of Ms. Nadeau and… Complaints were made in the civil action she initiated against Radio-Canada.”

It was made clear that the three parties would not make any further comments.

This whole affair dates back to 2020. This year, an anonymous complaint was filed against the now 63-year-old journalist. Following an internal investigation into the matter, Ms Nadeau was suspended for four weeks. She never returned to the air as her career ended abruptly after decades with Radio-Canada.

In August 2021, Radio-Canada first announced that its star journalist was retiring after a long medical leave. A few days later, the daughter of the late journalist Pierre Nadeau set out her version of the facts in an open letter published in Le Soleil. In it, she revealed that she had been pushed out the door and spoke of a “disguised dismissal”.

In August 2022, we learned that Pascale Nadeau was suing Radio-Canada for $350,000 over “lying and defamatory statements” made to her by her former employer, Le Journal de Montréal reported.

“Radio-Canada intentionally violated Ms. Nadeau’s dignity, integrity, honor and reputation by broadcasting false and defamatory comments about her with the sole purpose of protecting her reputation,” we said in the Aug. 15 report Read the motion filed in Superior Court, 2022.

“I didn’t think I would end my career so quickly, I still had good years ahead of me and I especially didn’t think I would end it like that through the back door,” she revealed in a letter.

Ms. Nadeau’s lawsuit primarily concerned the Crown corporation’s response following the publication of this letter.

“All of these unlawful actions by Radio-Canada were carried out in retaliation against Ms. Nadeau in order to discredit her in the eyes of her colleagues and the public. […] Ms. Nadeau has suffered and continues to suffer reputational harm as a successful public figure and role model in the world of television,” it said.

Then, last January, La Presse reported that Pascale Nadeau had filed a complaint with the Canada Industrial Relations Board in April 2022. She then accused the Union of Radio-Canada Workers (STTRC) of failing in its duty of “fair representation” by acting “arbitrarily” and in “bad faith,” particularly with regard to the filing of two complaints .
