The most important stages in Enrico Mattei’s life: He traces them – on the occasion of the anniversary of his death. The documentary by Rai Documentari, in collaboration with Aut Aut Production, “Enrico Mattei. Rebel for Love”, broadcast on Friday, October 27, at 9:20 p.m. on Rai 3. Through his character, the story allows us to understand the political and economic role of oil in today’s European and global geopolitical scene, focusing on lies in the challenges that await Italy and Europe to ensure greater energy security and autonomy, and proposes a historical perspective to better understand the present.
The story is filmed between Milan, Turin, Rome, Matelica and Acqualagna, the latter places where Mattei was born and raised. The documentary’s various testimonies provide a faithful and complete portrait of the character’s life arc. In the buildings that were Mattei’s headquarters, such as Eni’s Rome headquarters, eminent professors of economic history and geopolitical experts delve into the biographical history, while faces better known to general television audiences, such as Giovanni Minoli and Monica Giandotti, provide an original point of view to understand the character,
The film begins and ends with the testimony of Judge Vincenzo Calia, who led the investigation which, in a 2006 verdict, concluded that Enrico Mattei’s plane crashed due to sabotage. Within this narrative framework, the documentary reveals how Enrico Mattei’s existential and professional parable, from his early years at Agip to the leadership of Eni and the tug of war with the “seven sisters”, was fueled by his strong relationship with his faith and his intense Spirituality, especially through a strong feeling of love and devotion for poor people.
The story is rich in, and also makes use of, unpublished archival material, originally crafted through careful colorization of 16 and 35mm film, originally in black and white, with the contribution of animated illustrations highlighting private or controversial facts from Mattei’s life some of them institutional figures who wanted to celebrate it with enthusiasm. Among other things, the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto, who helps lead the viewer by the hand into today’s world. “In a difficult moment for the whole world, also because of the energy problem,” said Enrico Mattei. “Rebel for Love” must be seen as the latest update in the human and business history of the largest representative of state-owned enterprise.
