UN approves resolution for ceasefire in Gaza. Israel, “a disgrace” Latest News Ansa.it

The UN General Assembly has approved the draft resolution presented by Jordan on behalf of Arab states, which focuses on the ceasefire in Gaza, ensuring the entry of aid and preventing forced displacement. The text, which has no binding value, received 120 votes in favour, 14 against (including the USA and Israel) and 45 abstentions (including Italy).

“Today is a day that will go down in history in shame, a dark day for the UN, which no longer has a shred of relevance or legitimacy,” thundered Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan.

Hamas welcomed the UN General Assembly resolution calling for a “humanitarian ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip, calling for its immediate implementation and the urgent dispatch of aid.

The resolution was stymied by the United States, which had repeatedly reported that the draft text did not contain the words “Hamas” and “hostages.” Canada’s proposed amendment to add direct condemnation of the militia attack to the text was rejected.

Despite the majority of 88 countries in favor, the amendment was not adopted because it did not reach two-thirds of the yes votes.

Italy abstained for similar reasons as the USA, which voted against the ceasefire decision.

“There is a lack of unequivocal condemnation of Hamas’ attacks on Israel, a lack of recognition of the right to defend any state attacked, in this case Israel, and a demand for the immediate and unconditional release of the October 7 hostages not mentioned,” he said.
