A traffic accident became an unusual spectacle when a semi-trailer collided with a pickup truck containing a large amount of fireworks on Thursday evening.
The collision occurred around 10 a.m. on Highway 1 near Hope, British Columbia. The pickup was stopped on the side of the road when the semi-trailer struck it from behind, pushing it onto the road. The truck then crashed into a large rock near the road.
After the impact, an unexpected spectacle occurred: fireworks that were in “large quantities” in a trailer attached to the pickup truck went off, local media reported.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), none of the drivers were seriously injured in the accident, but the vehicle carrying the fireworks was completely burned by the flames.
The driver of the explosives transport vehicle was nevertheless taken to the nearest hospital for treatment of his minor injuries.
Due to the continued explosion of fireworks, first responders had to approach the scene of the accident with great caution. In addition, traffic was blocked by authorities while they intervened.
“I hid in my car and filmed through the sunroof after checking the condition of the two drivers because I didn’t want to get hit by one of the missiles,” said Chantal Shaw, who observed the scene. “It was the best fireworks display I’ve ever seen,” she added, according to CTV News.
However, another witness who passed near the explosion clarified that while the scene was impressive, it was also scary and loud.
