Ukraine takes part in peace talks in Malta without Russia

National security advisers from around 65 countries met in Malta this weekend to discuss Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposed peace plan for Ukraine. These talks took place without Russia’s presence. This is the third meeting of its kind this year, following the meetings in Jeddah and Copenhagen.

The ten-point peace plan proposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky includes restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity, withdrawing Russian troops, protecting food and energy supplies, nuclear safety and releasing all prisoners.

The talks will assess the ability of Kiev and its Western allies to secure sustained and broader support, particularly in the south, as the conflict between Israel and Hamas rages and distracts from the war in Ukraine. Last week, Moscow criticized Malta for organizing the event, calling it anti-Russian and counterproductive.

Maltese Foreign Minister Ian Borg said Malta would continue to support efforts to restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity. “Although we are a neutral country, we cannot help but condemn the injustices, atrocities and abuses of power in the region. We remain at the forefront of condemning this aggression,” he told delegates.

Significant losses

Fighting continues to rage in the Avdiika region near Donetsk, particularly as a large number of Russian attacks are heading in that direction. Although the Russian advances appear significant, they are not without casualties, which, according to British intelligence data transmitted by Ouest France, entail a fairly high loss of life.

Drone attack

Ukraine is accused by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday of deliberately attacking the Kursk nuclear power plant with “three unmanned aerial vehicles,” Le Monde reports. The latter is said to have caused neither casualties nor major damage, the daily newspaper specifies.

“One of the drones loaded with explosives crashed into a nuclear waste storage facility, damaging its walls, and the other two crashed into an administrative building complex,” he said in a statement.
