Regional elections have begun in Colombia

Bogota, October 29 (Prensa Latina) Colombia’s polling stations opened today at 8:00 a.m. local time to allow eligible citizens to vote for their regional authorities.

According to the National Register, 38.9 million Colombians will be able to elect 32 governors, 418 deputies, 1,102 mayors, 12,072 city councilors and 6,514 city councilors for the period 2024-2027.

“We have started with the local elections. Whatever the outcome in each municipality, I hope for calm and serenity in the face of the results,” said the country’s President Gustavo Petro.

He noted it in his profile

“Go to the polls and choose Colombia. The public power has the President’s mandate to take care of it and suppress any electoral crime. Remember that vote buying is a crime. Democracy and peace are only possible in freedom,” said the President.

On this election day, the polling stations will be open until 4:00 p.m. local time; according to the registry office, the results will be available at dusk.

Petro assured that all the authorities elected in these elections “will come together, without exception, if they have to come to Bogotá”.

For some analysts, the political map of Colombia remaining after these elections will define the transformation process driven by the Petro government.

If it wins a good share of the places in the competition this Sunday, the so-called government of change will have to accelerate the scale and impact of the public actions set out in the National Development Plan 2022-2026.

This plan consists of five major changes: human right to food, territorial planning around water, human security, productive economy for life and the fight against climate change, and regional convergence.
