Throat Kick: Reactions to the Death of Adam Johnson

There are many reactions to the death of Adam Johnson, a former Pittsburgh Penguins player whose throat was accidentally cut by a skate midway through a game.

Johnson played 13 games for the Penguins during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons. The organization also responded.

“The Penguins join the hockey world in mourning the loss of Adam Johnson, whose life ended far too soon,” the team said in a statement Sunday morning.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Adam’s family and friends, as well as Adam’s former and current teammates and coaches. Adam will always be a member of the Penguins family.”

The NHL reacts

The National Hockey League also responded on Sunday in a very short press release.

“The National Hockey League family mourns the loss of former Pittsburgh Penguins player Adam Johnson. We extend our prayers and deepest condolences to his family, friends and teammates.”

Many NHL teams also reacted on social networks.

Second division soccer team Sheffield Wednesday observed a minute’s silence before the start of their game on Sunday.
