Brazil sends veiled message to US condemns Hamas blames Israel

Brazil is trying to find a way out of the impasse between Russia and the USA with the UN check

As UOL announced on Saturday, Brazil called a new emergency meeting of the Security Council for this Monday afternoon following the intensification of Israeli attacks in Gaza.

Mauro Vieira will not only chair the meeting. He will try to hold a dialogue with the various diplomatic missions and foreign ministers in order to reach an agreement. Meanwhile, in recent days there have been intense negotiations between Council members in search of a minimum understanding that could be based on the resolution proposed by Brazil two weeks ago.

At this point, the Itamaraty text received twelve votes and only one veto: that of the USA.

Diplomatic sources believe that there is still no guarantee that a new text can be produced and it is believed that it would be risky to vote on a new resolution that has been vetoed. There are fears that with every impasse and failure, the credibility of the UN itself will be further undermined.

On Friday, the General Assembly passed a resolution calling for a “humanitarian ceasefire” by a large majority. The Israeli government not only criticized the resolution but also called it “ridiculous,” and hours later Gaza was left without internet or communications. Attacks also increased, a clear sign that they would not listen to the UN recommendation.

As UOL revealed, part of the strategy in voting on a text was to increase pressure on the Americans and Israelis, especially on the Security Council. The idea was to show that there was a growing international consensus on some kind of ceasefire.
