EXCLUSIVE: Devastated David Schwimmer flashes a peace sign while picking up Chinese food at home in New York, one day after his co-star Matthew Perry’s death

David Schwimmer appeared devastated on Sunday, just a day after the death of his Friends co-star Matthew Perry.

Schwimmer managed to flash a peace sign as he opened the door to his New York City home as he picked up a takeout order of Chinese food and some bubble tea from Xing Fu Tang.

Schwimmer carefully concealed as much of his face as possible with a black face mask and baseball cap, but he acknowledged those gathered outside with the gesture.

The 56-year-old starred alongside Perry throughout the decade of the iconic comedy television series. The gang later reunited for a Friends reunion special in 2021.

None of the Friends cast have yet posted individual tributes to their longtime friend and colleague on social media.

Earlier on Sunday, Perry’s remains were seen leaving his LA home after the star was found dead in his hot tub following a suspected drowning.

First responders found Perry unconscious in his home Saturday and were unable to revive him.

The late actor, 54, was laid into a coroner’s van from the front door of his home late Saturday evening.

LA County Medical Examiner’s Office workers loaded Perry’s body into the van before closing its doors and driving away.

Perry is believed to have drowned hours after a game of pickleball, and in a redacted recording of the dispatch audio, a man can be heard saying “save 23” and “drowning.”

A law enforcement mole told TMZ that investigators discovered prescription antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills in Perry’s luxurious home overlooking the Pacific Ocean – but no illegal drugs were found inside.

Perry struggled with addiction and serious health problems for years, but the sudden death of a man who brought laughter to millions of households was a slap in the face to those who knew him – or who felt like they knew him.

In New York’s West Village, fans gathered in front of the “Friends” apartment building.

Perry and his co-stars – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer – each negotiated $1 million per episode until the end of their zeitgeisty 236-episode series.

The gang reportedly pocketed a whopping $2.5 million each for a reunion show in 2021.

Schwimmer led the cast in a collective bargaining agreement that called for the cast to band together to secure the $1 million amount for their ninth and tenth seasons.

The group had been negotiating their salaries together since the show’s third season, but two of the stars initially had to take pay cuts.

Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston were making more money than the others in the group, and while Schwimmer was being offered roles in films, his agents decided it was time to renegotiate his Friends contract.

But he also managed to convince his colleagues to form a kind of mini-union and insist on equal pay.

By negotiating as a group, the group gained influence and some job security.

During the 2021 reunion, Perry surprised his co-stars by admitting he suffered from severe anxiety “every night” while filming the sitcom.

During the HBO special, he also spoke about the strength of the bonds between his fellow actors.

“The best way I can describe it is: If one of us ran into each other after the show was over, at a party or other social gathering, then that was it. That was the end of the night. “You just sat with the person all night and that was it,” Perry said.

He continued: “You apologized to the people you were with, but they had to understand that you had met someone special to you and that you would be talking to that person for the rest of the night .’And that’s how it worked.’

“We grew really close as a family, and part of that was because the initial success of the show was something that no one other than the other five actors could relate to or go through,” Schwimmer also said. “We became really close because of that experience.”

Perry also appeared in films such as “Fools Rush In” and “The Whole Nine Yards.”

He was nominated for five Emmys, including two for guest appearances on “The West Wing,” but never won the prestigious award.

Perry, who never married but dated a number of stars including Julia Roberts, has been open and public about his problems with drugs and alcohol after he first went into prison in 1997 due to an addiction to painkillers following a jet ski accident had gone to rehab.

After this first stay, he went to rehab again in 2001 and 2011. In an interview in 2016, he said that he didn’t remember filming three seasons of Friends.

Although Perry hid his demons from the public for years, he detailed his struggles in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers And The Big Terrible Thing.

He began by writing: “Hello, my name is Matthew, although you may know me by another name.” My friends call me Matty. And I should be dead.’

He added: “People would be surprised to know that I have been sober for the most part since 2001. Apart from about sixty or seventy little mishaps over the years.”

A long-time friend of Perry’s who was in recovery with him told on Saturday evening: “Everyone is in complete shock.” People are crying on the phone, struggling to accept this news.

“It’s no secret that he has struggled with drugs and alcohol for years, but the last time I spoke to him, which was a few weeks ago, he seemed to be doing well.”

“He was upbeat and sounded sober and positive.”

“He was in rehab 17 times and almost died from opioid abuse, but he was someone who was sincere about taking his own life and losing his sobriety every day.”

“This is such tragic news.” Everyone is praying that he doesn’t relapse. Matt was a really nice guy. He was always the first to welcome newcomers to the group and was always willing to help and assist.

“We are all finding it difficult to come to terms with this terrible news.”

Warner Bros, which produced “Friends,” said in a statement: “We are devastated to learn of the death of Matthew Perry. “He was a true gift to all of us. Our condolences go out to his family, his loved ones and all his fans.”

American broadcaster NBC, which aired the series for almost a decade, added: “We are incredibly saddened by the untimely death of Matthew Perry.”

“With his pitch-perfect comedic timing and wry wit, he brought so much joy to hundreds of millions of people around the world.” “His legacy will live on for countless generations,” it said.

Perry was a natural fit for the role of Chandler, beloved for his sarcastic one-liners, and many of his mannerisms grew out of the actor’s own demeanor.

In his memoirs, he said: “It was as if someone had followed me for a year, stealing my jokes, copying my mannerisms, photocopying my world-weary but witty view of life.” One character in particular stood out to me: I didn’t think , that I could “play” Chandler. I ‘was’ Chandler.”

But when he was first cast on “Friends” at the age of 24, his alcohol addiction came to the fore. At the end of the 10th season of the hit series, he was “in big trouble,” as Perry revealed years later.

In an interview in 2016, he said that he didn’t remember filming three seasons of the series because he was “a little out of it” at the time.

At some point during his time on Friends, Perry said he was taking 55 Vicodin painkillers a day and had reduced his weight to 128 pounds (a little more than 9 pounds).
