During these days there were massive demonstrations against a new mining concession granted to a Canadian company to exploit the largest copper deposit in Central America.

A movement called “Get Out of Panama Networks” is being launched through social networks, calling on citizens to join the demonstrations in which more than 50,000 people are taking part. Demands include the government’s repeal of Law 406 and the closure of the Cobre Panamá mining project through a phased closure plan.

Likewise, numerous motorcyclists from the “Los Reyes de la Calle” club mobilized, peacefully expressing their displeasure at the renewal of a mining concession to a Canadian company, and holding a parade along the Paseo de la Cinta coastal area around the Bay of Panama and other locations in the Panamanian capital, such as Calle 50 in the banking center, where the mass demonstrations took place.

As a sign of their dissatisfaction, they arrived on Saturday by sea through the international port of Punta Rincón, in the Donoso district, in the province of Colón (Caribbean).

The anti-mining demonstrations, which began two days after the signing of the agreement, were peaceful, but there were also clashes between groups of people and the police.

So far, according to the state police, 571 people have been arrested, including 92 minors, at least 55 businesses have been victims of vandalism and 37 government vehicles and 34 private vehicles as well as 34 police officers have been injured.
