How Erdoğan is fueling anger against the West

Türkiye. The president believes that the US and Europe are complicit in “war crimes” in the Gaza Strip. On Sunday he celebrated the 100th anniversary of the republic.

Istanbul. “Murderous Germany, murderous Israel, murderous Europe,” protesters shouted over the weekend in front of the German Consulate General in Istanbul. Around a hundred people waved Turkish and Palestinian flags, some with their children. Germany is “an accomplice in the Israeli massacres in Gaza”, stated the call from the conservative Anatolian Youth Association. As a precaution, Turkish police cordoned off the consulate building with several hundred people, but the demonstration was peaceful.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan looked as angry as the protesters outside the German consulate at a Palestine solidarity event before hundreds of thousands of supporters of his ruling AKP party. Every country has the right to self-defense, the president said of Israel. But what is happening in the Gaza Strip is a massacre and a war crime – and this massacre is the work of the West, which is pushing Israel forward because it doesn’t want to get its hands dirty. The Jewish State is just a pawn that will be used by the West and one day sacrificed.
