Mexico: Number of deaths after hurricane “Otis” rises to 48

Following the devastating hurricane “Otis” on the Mexican Pacific coast, the death toll rose to 48. Another six people were still missing, the Mexican government announced yesterday (local time).

“Otis” made landfall as a Level 5 hurricane Wednesday night, packing sustained winds of nearly 170 miles per hour and gusts of up to 210 miles per hour. In just twelve hours, it went from a tropical storm to a dangerous hurricane. It then lost strength over land and finally dissipated.

More than 270,000 apartments and homes were damaged by the hurricane. Additionally, 80% of all hotels in the tourism-dependent region were affected, the government announced.
