The Giants are getting their starting QB right when they need him
According to multiple reports, New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones has been cleared for contact.
First reported by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, Jones was apparently cleared by doctors before Sunday’s 13-10 loss to the New York Jets. His return comes at an incredibly fortunate time, as backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor suffered a painful rib injury in the loss to the Jets that resulted in him being hospitalized at a local hospital. Had Jones not been released, that would have meant UDFA rookie Tommy DeVito would have been in the starting lineup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Daboll explained NFL rules regarding game status. He said that even though Jones was cleared Sunday morning, he could not be activated because once a player is declared OUT, which Jones was on Friday, that status cannot be changed. Daboll added that he was not informed of Jones’ release until after Sunday’s game.
Daboll said he was told Jones would be “ready to go next week.” He will train fully on Wednesday.
Daboll said Taylor remained at Hackensack Medical Center as of Monday morning. Daboll would only say that the veteran quarterback “has ribs” and is “pretty sore.” He added that he and GM Joe Schoen will meet later Monday to discuss the possibility of adding another quarterback to the roster. He said, “There’s definitely a possibility” of adding a quarterback.
Jones returns after missing the last three games with a disc injury suffered in the Giants’ 31-16 loss to the Miami Dolphins. Reports on Sunday morning suggested it would be at least another week before Jones would be cleared for contact, so today’s news came sooner than expected.
