Chico Barney: Soap operas: Instead of remakes, should invest in sequels Splash

I think the network has made a great effort to replicate the dynamics of this particular remake. I think that in his repertoire of tricks to restore the growing audience exodus from open television, he could be testing something quite common in Hollywood but still frowned upon here: sequels.

Establishing successful television dramas as franchises could be a very healthy alternative. Instead of counting on the goodwill of those who watched TV 40 or 30 years ago, look for new opportunities with characters that originated less time ago to try to capture a younger audience as well.

To use this century’s most effervescent example of popular culture, just look at the fall of Marvel in theaters. For 15 years we have been pursuing the constant construction and expansion of an entire narrative universe based on a simple and humble film, 2008’s Iron Man.

Globo has countless intellectual properties that are almost as noticeable as Disney, the owner of Marvel. But instead of just focusing on revisiting old stories, it could also bring new stories to old acquaintances.

Avenida Brasil had so many popular groups that it’s a shame none of them survived the soap opera. The Pantanal remake itself could also be adapted into other products including soap operas that take the opportunity to tell what happens after some characters live “happily ever after.”

Instead of starting from scratch so many times a year with its various productions, Globo should rely on the impulses of already established fan bases and also on a more recent affective memory. It is unthinkable to propose a remake of “A Dona do Pedaço” so soon after its premiere, but nothing would prevent an expanded universe of this group revolving around the adventures of Maria da Paz.
