The fourth fatal victim was rescued after a serious accident at a large construction site in Hafencity, Hamburg. After more than 35 hours, the “difficult and exhausting” operation ended on Tuesday night, the Fire Department said. A special height rescue unit managed to reach the last remaining worker in the rubble overnight. The body was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine for further examinations.
According to initial findings, scaffolding fell into an elevator shaft on Monday morning. According to the Fire Department, the scaffolding fell from the eighth floor to the basement. The debris reached the second floor. An operations manager described the mountain of rubble on Monday as a “giant mikado” made of scaffolding poles.
According to the Fire Department, the last dismantling works took place at the accident site on Tuesday night. The life of a fifth worker is still in grave danger, it was said.
