In 2005, the Israeli state destroyed the homes of approximately 8,000 Israeli settlers in the Gaza Strip. Nirel Friedman was one of them. While he is now stationed in a colony in the West Bank, the military operation in Gaza gives him hope of returning to the Palestinian territories.

In Mevo Horon (West Bank), a small residential area, the streets bear the names of former Israeli settlements in Gaza. Nirel Friedman, who was evacuated from the Palestinian territory in 2005 at the age of 20, lives here. Nirel Friedman planted the seeds of an olive tree from his years in Gaza in his garden. Today he is drafted into the army as a reservist. The current military operation in Gaza gives him hope of returning to the Palestinian enclave. “I want to go back and it’s more than that, I believe it has to happen and that it’s right,” he believes.

Evacuation from Gaza is seen as a trauma

In his living room, an entire wall is dedicated to memories of Gaza. Under international law, the homes of around 8,000 settlers in Gaza were completely illegal. In 2005 they were destroyed by Israeli bulldozers. In the settler world, the evacuation from Gaza is a lasting trauma. For the international community, the illegal colonization of Palestinian territories partly explains the failure of the two-state solution.
