21 Italian neo Nazis arrested in Athens

21 Italian neo-Nazis were arrested at the international airport Athens Eleftherios Venizelos. This was reported by the Kathimerini website, according to which those arrested had reached the capital to take part in the far-right rally planned for this afternoon in the suburb of Neo Heraklion, north of Athens. Kathimerini does not provide any information as to which Italian organization the detainees belong to.

Today’s rally was organized by local right-wing extremist networks, such as:Hellenic front And Autonomous Athensto commemorate the death of two fighters from the now defunct neo-Nazi party Golden sunrisewhich took place on November 1, 2013. At that time, two militants were shot dead in front of a party headquarters; those responsible for the murder were never identified.

In 2020, Golden Dawn leaders were convicted of participating in a criminal conspiracy and the party was dissolved.

The twenty-one Italian citizens were arrested in order to initiate administrative expulsion proceedings against them on national security grounds, reports Kathimerini. Given the risk of possible clashes, the Attica General Police Directorate today banned both the memorial rally and other demonstrations announced by members of Greek anti-fascist organizations.
