Dhaka, November 1 (Prensa Latina) Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi today inaugurated three development projects for Bangladesh supported by the New Delhi government via video conference.
The joint initiatives include Akhaura-Agartala cross-border rail links and Khulna port-Mongla connection and Unit II of Maitree Thermal Power Plant.
During their interventions, Hasina and Modi agreed to highlight the projects as expressions of friendship and mutual cooperation between Dhaka and New Delhi and envisioned new achievements in bilateral relations.
The Bangladeshi dignitary emphasized that the two rail link projects will help boost trade, economy, tourism and people-to-people contacts and achieve economic prosperity in both countries.
Meanwhile, the thermal power plant will enable uninterrupted power supply to be provided in Bangladesh at an affordable price, he said.
Modi, for his part, reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development in conjunction with his national plan to transform the country into a prosperous and intelligent country by 2041.
He also said that India’s partnership with Bangladesh is a key aspect of its ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and the government is committed to strengthening it further.
The Indian Prime Minister also referred to the connectivity initiatives between India and Bangladesh, which he said have proven to be a lifeline during the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said that to establish peace, security and stability at the border, both nations signed the decades-delayed land border agreement and resolved the issue of maritime borders.
Modi mentioned the new bus and train lines connecting cities between the two countries in recent years and the increase in domestic trade with the commissioning of the world’s largest cruise ship Ganga Vilas.
