The PCU’s position was expressed during a meeting with the Palestinian ambassador here, Nadia Rasheed, at the legislative headquarters in this capital.
Rasheed was received by Senator Oscar Andrade, Deputy Ubaldo Alta and the political organization’s Secretary for International Relations Jorge Mazzarovich.
The Ambassador explained the serious humanitarian situation of the population of Gaza, which has been subjected to Israeli bombings and attacks for more than 20 days.
Uruguayan communist leaders reiterated their condemnation of the attacks on civilians and called for an immediate ceasefire, the provision of humanitarian aid and support for the search for peace based on respect for UN resolutions and the existence of two states.
It was previously announced that senators from the Frente Amplio (which includes the Communist Party) would summon Foreign Minister Francisco Bustillo to explain Uruguay’s abstention from a UN resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Bustillo will be appointed to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Broad Front bench coordinator Amanda Della Ventura announced.
“An abstention, when in reality a peace peace was called for humanitarian aid, that is, for the provision of food, water and essential supplies to an innocent population.” “There are two million residents in Palestine who are subject to all these attacks where children and women are killed,” the lawmaker said.
He described it as “serious” not to support this ceasefire, adding that “the current moment justifies a different stance from Uruguay.”
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to achieve an “immediate, permanent and permanent humanitarian ceasefire leading to a cessation of hostilities.”
In addition, in the context of the war between Israel and Hamas, the abducted civilians should be immediately released, the forced relocation of Palestinians should be stopped, and the delivery of food to the population of the Gaza Strip should be made possible.
Ambassador Rasheed and other counterparts from Arab League countries accredited here have on other occasions expressed discomfort with the pro-Israel stance of the government of President Luis Lacalle Pou, reflected in votes on United Nations resolutions.
