As the situation on the ground continues to evolve, we have decided to gather some information here that will allow us to get an overview of the larger context through maps, fact sheets and insights.
Yair Netanyahu, son and heir of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is at the center of the controversy. While thousands of army reservists have already returned from abroad to respond to the mobilization ordered in the Jewish state because of the war with Hamas, the 32-year-old is actually still in the USA. They say he’s hiding out in Miami and living a “good life.” We’ve been talking about this in Israel for days, but now the controversy has spread to the international media (ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR: ALL LIVE UPDATES – THE SPECIAL).
In Florida since April
According to the findings, Yair Netanyahu was sent to Florida by his parents last April. In fact, his inflammatory statements in recent months have helped fuel the protests of many Israelis against the government led by his father. Since then, the 32-year-old has almost disappeared. In fact, according to experts, he was silenced by his family and excluded from the defamation complaints he received. However, he has already been at the center of all kinds of controversies in the past: both because of his political-ideological outbursts, based on the slogans of the most extreme nationalist right, and because of the escapades of a private, privileged existence in which he did nothing and didn’t miss anything, between flirtations with Scandinavian models and raids in some strip clubs intercepted by paparazzi.

Israel-Hamas, bombs on refugee camps in the Gaza Strip. What we know
The war in Gaza
At the beginning of October, after the outbreak of the Gaza conflict, attention returned to him. In fact, Yair Netanyahu is accused of abandoning the country at its moment of need, contrary to all the national-messianic rhetoric of some of his previous posts. The young man, prosecutors recalled, had not hesitated in recent months to brand the compatriots who took to the streets against his father as “terrorists,” but now, despite the “declaration of war on,” he is on the other side side of the ocean remained terrorism” by Hamas. A behavior that many of his comrades scattered around the world and returning to Israel simply cannot tolerate. This is even less true in a country where, apart from Orthodox religious leaders, compulsory military service lasts three years for boys and two years for girls. A country, by the way, where Netanyahus of previous generations served in uniform in the elite special forces of the Sayeret Matkal. To give an example, Prime Minister Benjamin’s older brother Yonathan, known as Yoni, is considered a hero and died at the age of 29 while leading the command during the legendary lightning raid to free the hostages of the hijacked El Al flight 1976 in Entebbe, Uganda.

The allegations against Yair Netanyahu
Yair Netanyahu has therefore remained in Florida for the time being. One of his last appearances dates back to October 17, when he took part in an event in Fort Lauderdale to raise aid for Jewish families affected by Hamas attacks and for soldiers: an appearance that, however, was not enough to calm the controversy. Especially when you compare them with the many stories of compatriots who hastily returned, some even from their honeymoon, to follow the “call of home”. “Yair is enjoying life in Miami Beach while I’m on the front lines,” a reserve volunteer stationed on the border with Lebanon to keep Hezbollah at bay commented to the Times. “Many of us have left our jobs, our families and our children to return to our nation to protect our people. And we are not the ones who are responsible for what happened,” said another compatriot, who was indirectly quoted by the British press as rebuking the mistakes and negligence that many Israelis blame on the government of Benjamin Netanyahu or the state apparatus accuse after October 7th. “This – he added, referring to Yair’s absence – will certainly not help restore confidence in the leadership of the country.”
