The Ocean Viking ambulance ship chartered by SOS Méditerranée has accommodated 75 migrants in distress in the Ionian Sea off the coast of southeastern Italy, the association announced on Friday November 3rd. The survivors include 23 women and 17 children. They had been sailing for seven days aboard a sailboat that had left Izmir, Turkey. Most of them came from Afghanistan, Iran and Uzbekistan.
According to SOS Méditerranée, which was alerted to the situation by the Italian Maritime Rescue Center, the migrants’ water and food supplies had been exhausted for two days. The Ocean Viking was returning from the port of Ravenna in northeastern Italy, where it had disembarked 47 people saved in an earlier rescue, and was en route to Sicily.
The ship is now on its way to the port of Taranto in southern Italy, which was designated by the Italian authorities. According to the International Organization for Migration, 2,467 migrants will go missing in 2023 after attempting to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe.
