According to meteorologist Chris Jackson on his social media, some commercial aircraft flying between North American and European routes were carried by winds of up to 340 km/h as Cyclone Ciarán moved across the European continent this Friday (3).
“Thanks to the boost in the upper jet, we have some incredibly fast intercontinental flights from North America to Europe with peak wind speeds approaching 185 knots (340 km/h),” Jackson explained.
The expert also revealed that thanks to the wind at high levels of the atmosphere, the plane exceeded the speed of sound, which is 1,224 km/h compared to the normal value at sea level. In the air, planes carrying passengers reached 1,252 km/h.
However, Chris Jackson points out that there is a difference in the speed of sound on the ground and in the air. Even though the plane is flying faster, they have not yet broken the sound barrier.
