Stand brawl delays NEC Tournament championship game by more than 30 minutes as Bryant thrashes Wagner

The game was suspended for more than 30 minutes in the second half of the NEC Tournament Championship game on Tuesday night after a brawl broke out between Bryant and Wagner fans in the stands of the Bryant Chase Sports Centre. The fight included punching and using at least one drink as a weapon.

Both teams were sent to their locker rooms while police and officials sorted out the situation, and at least one fan was escorted out of the building before play resumed, with No. 1 seeded Bryant capping off his crushing 70 win. -43 over No. 2 seed Wagner to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Bryant was in solid control at 68–32 and 4:37 for the remainder of the game when the game was stopped due to a fight in the stands behind Wagner’s bench. There were no players involved, but Wagner’s Will Martin was sent off for leaving the bench and attempting to charge into the stands. He was held back by his teammates and the situation defused fairly quickly after the players noticed what was happening.

The teams maintained courtesy as they returned to the court, but with 2.6 seconds left, the game was declared game over by officials so Bryant’s fans could storm it.

Bryant won the regular season by one game over Wagner and has won 13 of his last 14 games, ending the regular season. As the No. 1 seed in the NEC tournament, he had a scare in the semi-finals against Mt. St. Mary’s, avoiding a 70-69 victory on Saturday, but posted a win claim and punched his first-ever ticket to the tournament. Big dance at the Division I level.
