Kahului restaurant receives red placard after complaint review – Maui Now

The Hawaii Department of Health Maui Food Safety Division issued a red “closed” sign and closed Sius Chinese Kitchen during a complaint inspection conducted on November 2, 2023. The facility, located at 70 E. Kaʻahumanu Ave., Ste. C-5 is operated by Sius Chinese Kitchen LLC.

According to a department news release, the DOH Food Safety Division, along with inspectors from the DOH Vector Control Division, conducted the inspection based on an anonymous complaint and found an active cockroach infestation.

“Live cockroaches were located on the food buffet, in the food, on food contact surfaces, serving utensils, appliances and walls. Cockroach egg casings and dead roaches have also been observed on or near food contact surfaces. Food containers were left open to allow pests to enter, and grease and debris were evident,” the DOH said.

Based on the observations, inspectors ordered the facility to close immediately to protect public health.

  • Seal or cover holes and openings through which pests can enter;
  • Eliminate clutter in the kitchen, storage and restroom areas. And
  • Discard broken storage containers and properly cover dry foods.

A follow-up inspection is scheduled for Monday, November 6, 2023.
