Sputnik Moscow acknowledges the possibility that NATO’s involvement in the Middle East conflict will manifest itself when the US needs to “legitimize” its actions, Aleksandr Grushko, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, told Sputnik.

“At this point, NATO is not an actor that wants to come to the fore on this issue. “Probably the NATO factor could manifest itself when the US needs to legitimize its actions or position,” Grushko said.

At the same time, he noted that Russia and NATO had “no contacts,” not even on the conflict in the Middle East.

“But the most important Western factor in the Middle East is the USA. The US never asks its allies for permission when necessary. For example, the war in Iraq two NATO countries were categorically against it.” [à operação dos EUA]. But when the U.S. needs “legitimization” of its actions—the more countries it supports, the more legitimate it appears—it turns to allies for support, or attempts to get it, sometimes by imposing its will by force.” Grushko concluded.

This Thursday (2), the US House of Representatives approved a security assistance bill worth $14.3 billion (R$70 billion) for Israel.
