Germany: A man with a child trapped in his car on the tarmac at Hamburg Airport

Hamburg airport was closed this Saturday evening after a man stormed onto the tarmac and fired several shots.

“There are currently incidents on the tarmac at Hamburg Airport. A major police operation is underway,” the Hamburg police said on their X account (formerly Twitter).

“We assume this is a hostage situation,” she added, without providing further details at this time.

Possible child abduction

According to the Bild newspaper, which cites police sources, the man shot twice in the air and there was also a four-year-old child in the vehicle. According to daily information, the person threw “flaming bottles”, similar to Molotov cocktails, onto the airport runway.

The driver’s wife had previously filed a police report about a possible child abduction, he added.

The police are on site with special forces and a helicopter. At the same time, the airport published a notice on its website saying that no landing or take-off was possible due to police intervention, again without providing further details.
