An armed man reportedly broke open an airport gate and walked onto the tarmac. He is said to have held two children hostage in his vehicle.

Traffic at Hamburg Airport in northern Germany was interrupted this Saturday, November 4th, in the evening due to a large police operation in connection with a hostage situation, the local police said. “There are currently incidents on the tarmac at Hamburg Airport. “There is a major police operation underway,” the Hamburg police said on their X account. “We assume this is a hostage situation,” she added, without providing further details at this time.

According to German media, an armed man broke open an airport gate and entered the tarmac. He allegedly shot twice in the air and held two children hostage in his vehicle, the popular newspaper Bild reported, citing police sources. The driver’s wife had previously filed a police report about a possible child abduction, he added.

The police are on site with special forces and a helicopter. At the same time, the airport published a notice on its website saying that no landing or take-off was possible due to police intervention, again without providing further details.
