In a statement posted on Twitter, Hamburg police said the situation was still under investigation and there was no confirmation about the hostages, although the presence of a child in the suspect’s vehicle was confirmed. Furthermore, there is currently no information about possible victims or injuries.
According to federal police spokesman Thomas Gerbert, numerous state and federal police officers were on site. A video taken at the airport, available below, appears to show a photo on the apron near the planes, but the origin of the flames has not been reported.
Shortly before midnight Brazilian time, already in the 6th hour of the incident, Hamburg Airport announced that the police operation was still ongoing, that it was still closed and that all flights on Sunday morning had been canceled.
An image was released (below) showing the hijacker’s car next to a Turkish Airlines Boeing 737. He would be in the vehicle with his son (the kidnapped child) and surrounded by police who were negotiating. The kidnapper requested that negotiations be conducted only in Turkish, but his nationality has not yet been confirmed.
