Five years after his intensive stay in the capital Paraná Roger Waters returned to Curitiba this Saturday (4), with the This is not a drill tourat Baixada Arena. The show with 24 great songs that shaped her almost 60 year career, whether with Pink Floyd or even a solo career. At the age of 80, Roger Waters showed once again that music and politics can actually have everything to do with each other. Photos and videos can be found below.

If Roger Waters appeared in Curitiba in 2018 amid strong political polarization, this time the scenario is even worse: we do not have electoral disputes as protagonists of events, but we are living a war that offers new and painful episodes every day. And the work of Waters’ former band Pink Floyd has never been more meaningful than it is now.

Known for his strong political and humanitarian discourse, Waters has been accused by many of using his ideology to the detriment of art. But only after watching the first few minutes of the show do we fully understand the significance of the musician’s controversial personality.

Unlike his last visit to Brazil, the mood during the presentation was very calm (apart from one or two isolated remarks that were hardly received). Roger Waters advocated what a good rock show is bound to do: a temporary connection between disparate groups of people.

Mega structure

The show started before the artist even took the stage. This is because the first effect was already achieved by the structure of the stage, which is divided into four screens and in the center of which is the stage, vaguely reminiscent of a theater.

From start to finish, the show was characterized by powerful speeches against war, prejudice, intolerance, capitalism and fascism, imitated by excerpts from videos of the Pink Floyd members themselves, animations, images of different peoples and other image controversies.

Combining the show’s pyrotechnics with the approach to each song, Waters delivered an engaging and impeccable script that shows art (plain and simple) above any political ideology.

Great classics

In a dark and dystopian environment, the artist first played two of Pink Floyd’s most important songs: “Comfortably Numb” and “Another Brick In The Wall”. There was also space for compositions from his solo career as well as songs that increased the audience’s energy (even more), such as the anthem “Wish You Were Here” and the impressive “Shine On You Crazy Diamond”.

Waters even risked presenting an unpublished composition: The Bar. The first act was divided into two acts and ended with the classic “Sheep”, with the special “participation” of an inflatable sheep and homages to the writers George Orwell and Aldous Huxley.

Two acts, connected

The first act served to showcase Waters’ ideals and intentions through his music and activism, interspersed with criticism of the current situation in the world and tributes to his former bandmates.

While the first part of the show was filled with a sense of belonging and reflection through art, the second part focuses on a clear homage to the classic album “Dark Side of The Moon”, one of the bestselling albums of all time. and responsible for building the entire myth that surrounds Pink Floyd to this day.

Exploring political, social and philosophical themes, but without the shadow of the ideological tension that marked his 2018 performance, Waters delivered a show at the height of what rock and art has to offer, leaving the audience open to virtually anyone moment delighted.
