“Intense shelling has been going on around the hospitals for more than an hour,” said Hamas government press service chief Salameh Maaruf.
The attacks were particularly severe near Gaza’s main hospital, Al Shifa, the spokesman said.
The bombings came after the Israeli army again accused Hamas of using hospitals in connection with the conflict.
The Israeli military released images purporting to show Hamas fighters firing from a hospital in Gaza.
Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said that “among Hamas’ worst war crimes is the use of hospitals to conceal its terrorist infrastructure.”
Hamas, which has ruled this Palestinian territory since 2007, categorically denied these accusations and said Israel was using them as a pretext for attacks on hospitals.
In addition, the Islamist movement agreed to commission “an international commission of inquiry” to investigate the hospitals and ensure that they are not being used for military purposes.
Israel has been waging a relentless offensive in the Gaza Strip since October 7 in response to the bloody Hamas attack that Israeli authorities said killed 1,400 people on its territory, most of them civilians.
According to Hamas, at least 9,770 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began.
