The Nobel Peace Prize winner imprisoned in Iran began a hunger strike. She sent a message to her family about it from the notorious Ewin prison in the capital Tehran, she said Monday on her Instagram account, which is run by relatives abroad. “We are concerned about Narges Mohammadi’s physical condition and health,” she said.
Mohammadi, one of Iran’s best-known human rights activists, received the Nobel Peace Prize this year. According to the Nobel Committee in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, she received the prize “for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and for their struggle to promote human rights and freedom for all.” The 51-year-old is currently serving a long prison sentence in Tehran’s notorious Ewin prison.
According to the Instagram post, Mohammadi is protesting prison conditions with his hunger strike: According to this, sick prisoners should be neglected and not given the medical treatment they need. At the same time, she protests against the mandatory wearing of the veil in the Islamic Republic.
