BREAKING: ‘It was a morally bad decision and extremely foolish’: Elon Musk says he will reverse Trump’s ‘permanent’ Twitter ban

Elon Musk has announced he will reverse the permanent ban on Twitter against Donald Trump after completing his $44 billion acquisition of the social media platform.

At a virtual conference in London on Tuesday, Musk said that Twitter’s attempt to ban the former US president was “a morally bad decision and extremely stupid.”

“I think it wasn’t right to ban Donald Trump,” Musk added, noting in particular Trump’s removal from Twitter for the first time since he began taking over the company last month.

Trump was banned from Twitter in January 2021 in response to his supporters storming the US Capitol in an attempt to block certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

Trump, who recently launched his own competing service called Truth Social, has previously claimed he would not return to Twitter even if invited back.

Appearing virtually at the FT Future of the Car conference, Musk called Twitter’s ban on Trump a “mistake”.

“It alienated a large part of the country and ultimately didn’t result in Donald Trump having no voice. He’ll be on Truth Social now,” Musk said.

In his speech on Tuesday, Musk also said his acquisition of Twitter, which is still subject to shareholder approval, could close well ahead of the October deadline.

“Just objectively, it’s not a done deal,” he said. “In the best-case scenario, it might be done in two or three months.”

Development of the story, more to come.
