A popular brand of “fun” dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets has been recalled after federal food safety regulators found pieces of metal in product bags that they said could “cause serious adverse health effects or death.”
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture is recalling approximately 30,000 pounds of “Tyson Ready Cooked Fun Nuggets Breaded Chicken Patties.” The chicken is pressed into dinosaur shapes.
- Consumers reported finding small pieces of metal in the product that caused at least one minor injury.
- The recall is considered a “Class I” recall and is considered the most serious of the three classifications. According to a USDA spokesperson, Class I recalls occur when there is a reasonable likelihood that use of the product poses a health risk that could result in serious harm or even death.
- The product comes in 29-ounce bags and has the company number “P-7211” on the back of the package.
Food safety officials say they are concerned that the dino nuggets could be sitting in consumers’ freezers and are urging people not to consume them.
The nuggets were manufactured on September 5 and shipped to Alabama, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin, where they were distributed to retailers, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
A Tyson spokesman said the company was not providing any information other than what was contained in a press release. The company said that if consumers have questions about the recall, they can contact Tyson Consumer Relations at 855-382-3101, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time.
The USDA said any consumer who has these nuggets should throw them away or return them to the point of purchase.
“A minor oral injury associated with the consumption of this product has been reported,” the USDA said in a news release.
