More than 12,000 counterfeit $2 coins: charges filed against a Sorel resident –

A Sorel resident is facing multiple charges of purchasing and importing counterfeit money into Canada after 12,049 Canadian $2 coins were intercepted from China earlier this year.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) made the announcement on Monday after an investigation was launched last January.

Jean-François Généreux will therefore be summoned to the Sorel-Tracy court on December 4th for purchasing, importing and possessing foreign currency and making false statements in a customs declaration.

Last February, the CBSA and the Sûreté du Québec executed multiple search warrants at the defendant’s home, seizing 14,581 additional Canadian $2 coins and 91 American $50 bills, all counterfeit.

“Purchasing, smuggling and possessing counterfeit currency harms the Canadian economy and fuels the black market,” recalls Annie Beauséjour, Quebec regional director, Canada Border Services Agency.

Anyone with information about questionable cross-border activity is asked to call the CBSA Border Watch Line at 1-888-502-9060.
