LeBron James announces son Bronny will return to USC this season if he passes medical tests following his cardiac arrest … as the 19-year-old watches his teammates take on Kansas State in Vegas

  • Last year, his teammate Vincent Iwuchukwu suffered a cardiac arrest but later returned
  • James then had the same problem during a team training session in the summer

USC freshman Bronny James took the court at T-Mobile Arena in gray sweatpants as his teammates warmed up for Monday night’s opener against Kansas State.

And while his team played, his father — NBA all-time leading scorer LeBron James — revealed what the family hopes will get Bronny back on the floor.

“Bronny’s progress is going in the right direction,” LeBron James said Monday night in Miami after he and the Los Angeles Lakers played the Heat. “He’s done with rehab.” He can do more and more every week. We have a big – a big – moment at the end of the month to see how we can move forward.

“When he’s free, it won’t be long before he’s back on the floor and with his teammates and training with the thought of being back on the floor and playing in game situations,” added LeBron James. “Everything is on the rise.”

Bronny is still on his way back after suffering a cardiac arrest during a summer training session. LeBron said last month that his son had undergone surgery to repair a congenital heart defect that caused the collapse.

“He’s improving,” LeBron James said. “He’s on the right track.”

There is no known timetable for Bronny’s return to play, but the hope is that it will occur at some point this season.

USC dealt with a similar situation last year when big man Vincent Iwuchukwu suffered a cardiac arrest in July before finally returning to the court to play 14 games in January.

“Bronny is doing very well,” Enfield said after training earlier this year.

“But we just can’t say anything medically. “He’s going to class and doing very well in school and we’re very happy for him.”

After Bronny spent three days in a local LA hospital, the James family released a statement saying that a congenital heart defect was the likely cause of the soon-to-be 19-year-old’s cardiac arrest.

“He’s there when he can be,” Enfield said of James. “And he gets into trouble [with] I did some homework and I’m doing very well. His grades are excellent right now and he is the true student-athlete.”

After the Wildcats finished their warmups at the west end of the court, James strolled to the open field, took a few shots near the top of the key, found his spot in the corner and hit three more shots from distance before converting a 3-pointer and eliminated with the Trojans in 21st place.

LeBron has long dreamed of one of his sons – Bronny or younger son Bryce, also a rising star – playing alongside him in the NBA. Bronny would be eligible for the 2024 NBA Draft if he chose that path.

LeBron James said all of the doctors involved in his son’s recovery, as well as those at USC, did a “hell of a job.”

“We are proud of his progress,” LeBron James said of his son. “We are proud of his strength.”

LeBron’s wife Savannah and son Bryce sat courtside at the game.

“It’s very important to us to show support for all the kids, and obviously Bronny isn’t playing tonight, but we wanted to support the rest of the young men who have worked all summer to get to this point,” Savannah James told The Associated Press during halftime.

“We know Bronny really wants to play, but he’ll make his comeback soon and then we’ll be here to actually watch him on the floor.” But we’re a USC family and we want to make sure we’re here, to support Bronny and the entire team.”
