Israeli minister urges condemnation of anti-Semitism after Paul Kessler’s death

Israeli War Minister Benny Gantz called on the international community to “unambiguously and proactively condemn terrorism and anti-Semitism” following the death of Jewish-American Paul Kessler during a clash at dueling pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian rallies.

Kessler, 69, “was in a physical altercation with counter-protesters” in California, US, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement, according to NBC News. He fell backwards during the conflict and died on Monday.

“The murder of the Jewish-American Paul Kessler should be a clear warning signal for the entire world,” said Gantz said on social media. “Israel today stands at the forefront of the global fight against the murderous anti-Semitic ideology behind the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7th.”

Since the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7 and Israel’s subsequent retaliatory siege of the Gaza Strip, attacks on Jewish people and anti-Semitic sentiment have increased worldwide.

Jordan is open to “all options” as the Gaza conflict worsens

Jordan said on Monday it was leaving “all options” open as it responded to Israel’s failure to distinguish between military and civilian targets in the increasing bombardment and invasion of the Gaza Strip.

Prime Minister Aktuell al Khasawneh did not specify what steps Jordan would take after the country recalled its ambassador to Israel in protest at Israel’s offensive in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7.

Jordan also announced last week that Israel’s ambassador, who left Amman shortly after the Hamas attack, would not be allowed to return, effectively declaring him persona non grata.

“All options are on the table for Jordan in dealing with Israeli aggression against Gaza and its impact,” Khasawneh, whose country signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, told state media.

Netanyahu said there would be no ceasefire until the Israeli hostages were released

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated that there will be no ceasefire in Gaza until Hamas agrees to release Israeli hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu holds a press conference with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Cabinet Minister Benny Gantz (not pictured) at the Kirya military base in Tel Aviv, Israel, on October 28, 2023.

“Without the release of our hostages, there would be no ceasefire, no general ceasefire in Gaza,” he said in an exclusive interview with David Muir, host of ABC News’ “World News Tonight.”

Asked whether there would be a humanitarian pause in the event of the release of hostages, Netanyahu said: “There will be a ceasefire for this purpose. We are waiting for that to happen. That hasn’t happened yet.”

Hamas militants are currently holding around 240 hostages they kidnapped on October 7 and brought to the Palestinian enclave. Israel has launched an air campaign and a ground offensive to drive out the militants who rule Gaza.

On the question of who should govern Gaza after the end of the war, the prime minister said: “Those who do not want to continue the path of Hamas.” He added that Israel must assume security responsibility in Gaza “indefinitely” to ensure that the Hamas cannot carry out any further large-scale terrorist attacks.
