Cairo.- Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk spoke here today about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip caused by Israeli aggression.
During the dialogue, Shoukry called on the international community to fulfill its legal and humanitarian responsibilities, reach a ceasefire and put an end to this disaster, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a statement.
He also criticized Israel’s continued bombing of civilian facilities and its collective punishment policy of siege and expulsion.
The minister reviewed Egypt’s efforts and the results of its political contacts with regional and international partners, organizations and UN agencies to promote a ceasefire and increase humanitarian assistance to the enclave.
For his part, the UN official praised Egypt’s efforts to contain the crisis and the work to end it.
As part of his tour of the Middle East, which began here on Monday, Türk met separately with Arab League Secretary General Ameh Aboul Gheit, with whom he also analyzed the situation in Gaza. (PL)
