A 69-year-old Jewish man died this Monday, November 6, 2023, after being beaten during a demonstration between pro-Israelis and pro-Palestinians in Thousand Oaks (California), American police said on Tuesday in the Los Angeles Times with. A month after Hamas’ terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, to which the IDF responded with an offensive on Gaza, numerous protests are taking place in the West and around the world.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said the incident occurred after violent clashes between the two groups of protesters. The old man, a certain Paul Kessler, was hit in the head and thrown to the ground. At the scene, police determined that the victim “had sustained head trauma,” according to the statement cited by the Los Angeles Times. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died on Monday.
“Slammed with a megaphone”
California police opened an investigation. There were no arrests as of Monday evening. A video posted on social media shows the old man lying on his back on the asphalt with his head bleeding.
His death caused a stir in the Jewish community in Southern California. Several organizations expressed their outrage. “We demand security. We will not tolerate violence against our community. We will do everything in our power to prevent this,” the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles said in a statement, which also noted that the man was “hit in the head with a megaphone.” The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called on law enforcement to “launch a thorough investigation to find those responsible.”
