Sony has released the trailer for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the 2021 sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Afterlife brought ghost hunting to rural Oklahoma, but the upcoming fifth film in the series returns to its roots in New York City. In the trailer for “Frozen Empire,” an idyllic summer in New York turns icy when a mysterious “deadly cold” grips the city. Paul Rudd leads a ragtag group of Ghostbusters to battle the frozen enemy.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” premiered in November 2021 and was directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, the original “Ghostbusters” director. After a single mother takes her two children to a small town in Oklahoma, they discover their grandfather’s secret legacy and their connection to the Ghostbusters.
Afterlife starred Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace, all of whom were new to the franchise. Original stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver also returned in Afterlife with their Ghostbusters. Jason Reitman co-wrote the “Afterlife” reboot with Gil Kenan and Aykroyd, and Ivan Reitman served as producer.
Kenan is the director of the upcoming film. Reitman teased the sequel’s production in an Instagram post in February at the iconic “Ghostbusters” fire station next to Kenan, with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” cinematographer Eric Steelberg taking the photo.
“It is an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga,” Kenan said in a statement when he was announced as director. “I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of Mann Valley West that one day he would direct a ‘Ghostbusters’ movie.”
The latest installment is the fifth film in the series, following “Ghostbusters” in 1984, “Ghostbusters II” in 1989, the female-directed “Ghostbusters” in 2016 and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in 2021.
Sony is expected to release the film on March 29th. Check out the trailer below.
