“Carrot and Bronze” is not just the name of a brand. The vegetable really has the power to brown the skin, and a young Scottish woman discovered this in an unusual way.

Dena Rendall, 21, used to eat about ten carrots a day because she believed the habit was good for her health. This was the case for almost 10 years and gradually increased the consumption of the product. She only realized something was wrong when other people pointed out that her skin was turning an orange hue.

To them, the color would probably be the result of a botched procedure. “People at school noticed and asked me if I was getting a tan, which made me a little selfconscious,” Dena recalled, according to the Chron.

“Every day when I came to school people would say, ‘You’re wearing makeup today.’ I’m not a makeup person and so I think people thought, ‘She tried and failed miserably’ because she didn’t wear makeup regularly.”

The highlight was a friend’s 18th birthday party. Dena and her colleagues were getting ready and taking photos when the camera flash showed how orange her face was. “Nobody told me I looked orange when we were getting ready. It was only when we used the flash that everyone started laughing.”

“I didn’t understand what was so funny and thought, ‘This can’t be real.’ “I looked like Oompa Loompa,” he compared, citing the orange creatures from the film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (1971). .

His mother even thought it was something more serious probably jaundice, caused by possible liver problems.

But Dena knew it was nothing like that and decided to research it herself. That’s how she discovered carotenemia, a clinical condition resulting from yelloworange skin pigmentation and high blood levels of betacarotene, an antioxidant pigment.

This usually happens precisely due to excessive consumption of carotenerich foods such as carrots and does not pose any risk. However, it can take a while for the skin to return to its natural color.

To test the hypothesis, the young woman reduced her consumption from 10 to 8 carrots per day and noticed a change in her skin tone, with the orange color becoming less noticeable. “I really love carrots and I love eating a lot of them every day, but I know that I don’t eat them in the normal way for other people,” confessed the young woman.

According to the publication, she now eats six carrots a day. Dena jokes that with this amount she guarantees herself a natural tan all year round.
